Constructors Number 2685. On September 11, 1943 first test flight. On September 14, 1943 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24J-15-CO Liberator serial number 42-73115. On September 20, 1943 flown to the modification center in Tucson, AZ then on September 27, 1943 flown to the staging area. On October 16, 1943 departed Fairfield Field via Hickam Field then across the Pacific on October 21, 1943 arrived at Garbutt Field at Townsville. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 380th Bombardment Group (380th BG), 530 Bombardment Squadron (530th BS). No known nickname or nose art. Assigned to crew chief MSgt Robert L. Askins. Mission History On January 8, 1944 took off from Fenton Airfield piloted by Lt. Harold S Mullhollen with crew no. 59 on its first combat mission (FEN IV-1) a bombing mission against Kendari in the Celebes (Sulawesi). Over the target, the formation was attacked by at least thirteen A6M Zeros that targeted this bomber damaging at least two engines and caused it to crash into a hill on Wowoni Island. This bomber was lost on its first mission. Recovery of Remains After the crash, the remains of the crew were recovered and transported to the United States for permanent burial. Memorials The entire crew was buried on August 26, 1949 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in a group burial at section 82 site 72. Mullhollen earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker erected by his mother Mrs. Ruth Madar and daughter Barbara Ann 1946 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ada, OH near the grave of his grandfather, Elmer N. Shadley. Stevenson also has a memorial marker at Frost Cemetery in Frost, TX. Relatives Milas Yoes (nephew of Eugene Schell) "My uncle Gene Schell was a member of Mulhollans crew." References Note, some sources incorrectly spell the pilot's name as "Mullhollen" [sic, Mulhollen] Previously, Mulhollen managed to pull up flying another B-24 from an inverted dive before pulling up at 3,500'.
