Location Lat 2° 0' 0S Long 121° 0' 0E Sulawesi Island is part of the Greater Sunda Islands (Greater Sundas). Previously known as Celebes Island. The Island is formed by four peninsulas: Minahassa Peninsula, East Peninsula, South Peninsula and Southeast Peninsula. To the north borders Celebes Sea, northwest is Borneo and to the east is the Molucca Sea and Molucca Islands (Maluku). To the southeast is the Gulf of Tomini and Banda Sea and Makassar Strait to the west. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as Celebes Island and was part of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today known as Sulawesi in Indonesia. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese during January 1942. Attacked by Allied aircraft during the war. Bypassed by Allied ground forces, the area was occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the war. Sulawesi (Celebes) North Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Utara) located in the northern portion of Sulawesi. Central Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Tengah) located at the center of Sulawesi. West Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Barat) located in the west of Sulawesi. South Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Selatan) located in southern Sulawesi. Southeast Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Tenggara) located in the southeast of Sulawesi. Gorontalo Province includes Gorontalo on the southern coast of the Minahassa Peninsula. Contribute
