Location
The Makassar Strait seporates Borneo to the west and Sulawesi (Celebes) to the east. Also known as the Makassar Straits (plural). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Indonesia.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, two naval battles happened in the Makassar Strait. The first was Battle of Balikpapan on January 24, 1942. The second was Battle of Makassar Strait (Battle of the Flores Sea, Action off Madura Strait, Battle of Bali Sea) on February 4, 1942.

Battle of Balikpapan
The Battle of Balikpapan occurred on January 23-24, 1942 in the Makassar Strait off Balikpapan. The battle was between Allied aircraft bombing the Japanese landing force and the Naval battle was U.S. Navy destroyers attacking the Japanese landing force and was the first USN surface engagement in Southeast Asia during the Pacific War.

Battle of Makassar Strait (Battle of the Flores Sea, Action off Madura Strait)
The Battle of Makassar Strait, sometimes referred to as the Battle of the Flores Sea or the Action off Madura Strait, was a battle that took place on February 4, 1942 between the ABDA (American, British, Dutch, Australian) fleet, under the command of the Dutch Admiral Karel Doorman, and Japanese bombers.
