Location Lat 5° 8' 24S Long 119° 25' 20E Makassar is located on the south peninsula of Sulawesi (Celebes). Also known as Makasser or Makasar. Borders Makassar Harbor and beyond the Makassar Strait to the west. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in South Sulawesi Province on Sulawesi (Celebes) in Indonesia. Wartime History On February 8, 1942 at 1:30pm the Japanese Navy Makassar Invasion Force arrives off Makassar and began landing the Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force (Sasebo SNLF). On February 9, 1942 a Japanese captures Makassar without opposition as the Dutch garrison of roughly 1,000 troops under the command of Colonel M. Vooren attempted to withdraw inland but were captured. Afterwards, Makassar is occupied by the Japanese. Starting in the middle of June 1943 attacked by Allied aircraft until the end of the Pacific War.
