Location
The Molucca Island Group (Molucca Islands) is a group of nearly a thousand islands. Also known as the Moluccas Islands or Maluku Islands. Borders the Pacific Ocean to the north, Mulucca Sea to the west, Ceram Sea and Banda Sea and beyond the Timor Sea to the south, Flores Sea to the southwest, Arafura Sea to the southeast and to the east the Halmahera Sea, Ceram Sea and beyond West Papua Province on western New Guinea.
Dubbed the "Spice Islands" due to the nutmeg, mace and cloves grown there sought by early European explorers and colonists. Prewar and during the Pacific War, located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today the islands span both Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku) and North Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku Utara) in Indonesia.
