| Location West Papua Province encompasses the western portion of New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of Dutch New Guinea (DNG) forming the western portion of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). In December 1949, the Netherlands recognized Indonesia over the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) with the exception of Dutch New Guinea that they continued to administer but began to prepare the area for independence forming a parliament in 1961 with plans for independence nine years later. On August 15, 1962 became part of Indonesia after the New York Agreement. Afterwards, became known as West New Guinea. In 1963 the western portion was renamed West Irian (Irian Barat). In 1973 during the Suharto administration renamed Irian Jaya, meaning "to rise" or "rising spirit" in the Biak language but sometimes translated as "Glorious Irian". In 2002 renamed Papua Province (Provinsi Papua) and in 2003 the western half became West Papua Province (Papua Barat). Sansapor (Cape Sansapor, Sausapor) located on the north coast of New Guinea Sanspor Airfield (Mar Drome). Mar located near Sansapor on the north coast of Western New Guinea. Manokwari Regency Manokwari located on the northwest tip of Western New Guinea includes Manokwari Airfield. South Manokwari Regency Moari (Muari) located on the on the east coast of the Vogelkop Peninsula (Bird's Head Peninsula). Oransbari located on the on the east coast of the Vogelkop Peninsula (Bird's Head Peninsula). South Sorong Regency (Sorong Selatan Regency) Moegim (Moegem, Mugim) lcoated on the north coast of Western New Guinea. Fakfak Regency Fakfak (Fak-Fak) located on the north coast of Western New Guinea. Kokas (Kaukas) located on the north coast of Western New Guinea. Bintuni Bay Regency (Teluk Bintuni Regency) Bentoni Bay (Teloek Bentoni) located on the southern coast of western New Guinea near Babo. MacCluer Gulf (McCluer) located on the southern coast of western New Guinea near Babo. Babo located on the southern shore of Maccluer Gulf, Babo Airfield. Sagan (Sagun) located near the north coast of western New Guinea. Garoewah (Garoewah, Garoewan) located on the north coast of western New Guinea bordering MacCluer. Otawir (Otawiri, Otawari, Ottawiri) located on the north coast of western New Guinea include Otawir Airfield. Geboken Island located inside MacCluer Gulf. Mongosah (Morgosah, Mongosah, Mongosa) located on the southern coast of New Guinea. Pitt Strait (Sagewin Strait) located between Salawati Island and Batanta Island. Sele Strait (Galowa Strait, Revenges Strait) located between Salawati Island and western New Guinea.
