Location Lat 2° 25' 60S Long 133° 9' 0E Sagan is located at an elevation of 16' / 4m in western New Guinea. Also known as Sagun. Borders Maccluer Gulf to the north and west. Further to the east is Babo. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Between 1963–1973 part of West Irian (Irian Barat) and during 1973-2002 known as Irian Jaya. Today located in Teluk Bintuni Regency (Bintuni Bay Regency) in West Papua Province (Papua Barat, West Irian Jaya) in Indonesia. Wartime History During 1942 occupied by the Japanese during their occupation of Dutch New Guinea. Later, the Japanese built Sagan Airfield at this location. Attacked by Allied aircraft starting in early July 1944 until the end of October 1944 and neutralized. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
