Location Lat 2° 32' 60S Long 133° 25' 0E Babo is located western New Guinea on the southern shore of Bentuni Bay inside Maccluer Gulf. Known as "Kampung Babo" in Indonesia. Prewar, during the Pacific War located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Between 1963–1973 part of West Irian (Irian Barat) and during 1973-2002 known as Irian Jaya. Today located in Teluk Bintuni Regency (Bintuni Bay Regency) in West Papua Province (Papua Barat, West Irian Jaya) in Indonesia. Babo Airfield Prewar airfield built by the Dutch. Occupied by the Japanese until the end of the war. Today it is still in use for local flights. Wartime History Two jetties were located to the east of the airstrip, on the Kasira River. The area around the airfield and vicinity included troop, dump and airfield support areas. Attacked by Allied aircraft until early November 1944 and neutralized. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
