Location
Dutch New Guinea (DNG) was the western half of New Guinea and surrounding islands. Sometimes referred to as Netherlands New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI).

Wartime History

On March 5, 1942 Imperial General Headquarters by Navy Directive No. 62 ordered Commander-in-Chief, Combined Fleet, upon completion of the Battle of the Java Sea was to annihilate the remaining enemy force in the Dutch New Guinea and to occupy strategic points of that territory and survey them for airfields, anchorages and oilfields, as well to secure a good communication and supply line with Eastern New Guinea. During the Japanese Japanese occupation Dutch New Guinea (DNG), they claimed no casualties.

After the tide of war changed with Japanese defeats in Eastern New Guinea, the area was attacked by Allied aircraft. On April 22, 1944 the U.S. made a successful amphibious landing at Hollandia and began the liberation of western New Guinea and offshore islands to gain bases and build airfields for the liberation of the Philippines. The American island hopping campaign isolated many Japanese on locations that were bypassed until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
