| Location Cape Waios is located on the Vogelkop Peninsula on the north coast of western New Guinea near Sansapor (Sausapor) area. Also known as False Cape. Offshore is Amsterdam Island (Mios Su). Prewar and during the Pacific War, located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in West Papua Province in Indonesia. Wartime History On June 8, 1944 roughly 50 miles north Cape Waios was the Battle of Cape Waios between six Japanese destroyers attempting to reach Biak that were attacked by B-25 Mitchells from the Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (17th TRS) and resulted in the loss of three B-25s and scored two hits on Harusame causing it to sink.
