2° 39' 35" S Long 132° 59' 30" E Otawir is located at an elevation of 59' / 18m in western New Guinea inland from Maccluer Gulf. To the west is Sagan (Sagun). Also known as Otawari or Ottawiri.
Allied wartime spelling Otawiri. Today known as Otoweri. Prewar, during the Pacific War located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Between 1963–1973 part of West Irian (Irian Barat) and during 1973-2002 known as Irian Jaya. Today located in Teluk Bintuni Regency (Bintuni Bay Regency) in West Papua Province (Papua Barat, West Irian Jaya) in Indonesia.
Wartime History
During 1942 occupied by the Japanese during their occupation of Dutch New Guinea. Later, the Japanese built Otawir Airfield at this location. Attacked by Allied aircraft starting in early July 1944 until the end of October 1944 and neutralized. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
