Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery group burial at section 82 site 156
On November 3, 1949 this group burial laid to rest eight Americans from three aircraft lost on July 28, 1945 that were captured and became Prisoners Of War (POW) of the Japanese. All eight were detained at Chugoku Kempei-Tai Headquarters (Chugoku Military Police Headquarters) in Hiroshima and died on August 6, 1945 in the atomic bomb blast. The group burial marker reads:
"Julius Molnar SSGT AC July 28, 1945 [overwritten with the correct of August 6, 1945]
Hugh H Atkinson Sgt AC [radio operator B-24J "Lonesome Lady" 44-40680 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
Charles O Baumgartner S Sgt AC [ball turret gunner B-24J "Taloa" 44-40716 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
Buford J Ellison Sgt AC [engineer B-24J "Lonesome Lady" 44-40680 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
John A Long Jr Cpl AC [nose turret B-24J "Lonesome Lady" 44-40680 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
Durden W Looper 2d Lt AC [co-pilot B-24J "Lonesome Lady" 44-40680 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
Raymond Porter LtJG USNR [pilot SB2C-4 Helldiver 21079 ditched and captured July 28, 1945]
James M. Ryan 2d Lt AC [bombardier B-24J "Lonesome Lady" 44-40680 bailed out captured July 28, 1945]
August 6, 1945"
