USAAF 5th AF 38th BG Former Assignments 3rd BG 13th BS |
Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Constructors Number 87-7902. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as 41-29737. On September 1, 1942 flown overseas by pilot 2nd Lt. Gordon K. McCoun via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History On September 17, 1942 assigned to the 5th Air Force, 3rd Bombardment Group, 13th Bombardment Squadron. Nicknamed "General Custer" in quotations in a cursive lettering on the right side of the nose. Later, named "Ground Hog" on the left side of the nose in capital letterts with a white shadow and the nose art of the front of a hog head. Possibly, this B-25 carried both nicknames on the opposite sides of the nose at the same time. This B-25 was field modified to a strafer version with eight .50 caliber machine guns in the nose. Later, transferred to the 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG). Nicknamed "Twenty or Nothing". In service until at least September 1944. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
