Constructors Number 87-8801. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25D-20 Mitchell serial number 41-30636. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia arriving in early April 1942. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 90th Bombardment Squadron (90th). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines: R-2600-13 serial numbers a) 42-77490 and b) 42-77566. Aboard were .50 caliber M2 machine guns serial numbers not noted in Missing Air Crew Report 730 (MACR 730). Mission History On September 27, 1943 took off from Dobodura Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. Keith A. McKee on a shipping strike over Wewak. Over the target area, last contacted by radio by Captain Donald J. MacLellan. Last seen over Wewak Harbor with both engines burning and the landing gear partly extended and loosing altitude and headed out to sea. Last seen by 1st Lt. Charles W. Howe and John C. Boggs, who observed this B-25 to crash into the sea. When this B-25 failed to return, it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Also lost was B-25D 41-30434 (MIA). Memorial The entire crew was officially declared dead on January 14, 1946. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. McKee earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Air Medal, Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell, SD. Nelson earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, posthumously. Kylius earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Gulli earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Arlington National Cemetery at section MH, site 180. Carpenter earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Carpenter also has a memorial marker at Groton Village Cemetery in Groton, VT at section 3, row 11.
