Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG) "The Crusaders", 70th BS Bombardment Squadron (70th BS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On January 20, 1944 took off from Stirling Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. John E. Warner as one of nine B-25s on a that staged through Torokina Airfield / Piva Airfield on Bougainville for a bombing mission against Vunakanau Airfield near Rabaul. This B-25 was damaged and ditched into the sea. Fates of the Crew The entire crew survived and successfully deployed their life raft. Rescue On January 22, 1944 the crew were rescued by a PBY-5 Catalina piloted by Lt. B. Smith from VP-14 at roughly Lat 4° 50' South, Long 152° 40' East.
