Crashed Bomber Found
Soldiers from the PNG Command Survey section found this crashed bomber about five miles inland from the sea in the Musa River area of the Northern District.
The aircraft is either an A-20 Havoc from the RAAF or a Boston from USAAF. Director of the Territory Air Museum, Mr. W. Chapman, said yesterday.
The aircraft was photographed by Sergeant P. J. Davis and Sergeant J. W. West from a Platus Porter. The men found a crashed B-17 Flying Fortress bomber only four miles from this aircraft.
The bombers would probably never be recovered, Mr. Chapman said. "They were too heavy and in an area difficult to get to", he said. A Department of Civil Aviation spokesman said the department had not had a record of the wrecks until told of them by the Army this week.
