USAAF 42nd BG 70th BS
|
Aircraft History Built by Martin in Baltimore, Maryland. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-26B Marauder serial number 41-17574. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG), 70th Bomber Squadron. Nickname "Gallopin' Ghost". On June 2, 1942 took off from Hamilton Field pilot 1st Lt. Barton W. Cressy, co-pilot 2nd Lt. John L. Sherlock, navigator 2nd Lt Eugene L. Honett and radio/engineer Sgt Paul J. Yakaski as part of "A Flight" (Flight A) with two 250 gallon auxiliary fuel tanks installed in the bomb bay and a reduced crew on a ferry flight to Hickam Field on Oahu to join the Hawaiian Defense Command. This B-26 had the longest flight because it waited for B-26B "Irene" 41-17564 and after landing safely, this bomber ran out of fuel while taxiing. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References USAF Serial Number Search Results - B-26B Marauder 41-17574 Bombs Away!
