Location Oahu (O'ahu) is the third largest of the Hawaii Islands located roughly the center of the island chain and the most populous. Prewar and during World War II part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today part of the State of Hawaii in the United States. Wartime History Oahu was an important location prewar and during the Pacific War centered around Pearl Harbor and military installations including barracks, airfields and installations operated by the U.S. Navy (USN), U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force (JAAF). By May 1940, when the main part of the United States Pacific Fleet moved to Pearl Harbor had long been under development as a major naval base. Diamond Head located on the southern coast to the east of Honolulu. Mount Tantalus (Tantalus, Puʻu ʻōhiʻa) located in the Koʻolau Range north of Honolulu. Central Oahu Aiea located in the center of Oahu includes Fort Shafter. Wahiawa located near the center of Oahu includes Schofield Barracks. Kailua Bay Kaneohe (Kāneʻohe) located on the northern coast of Oahu bordering Kaneohe Bay. Kaneohe Bay (Kāneʻohe Bay) located on the northern coast of Oahu. North Coast Waimea Falls located inland from the north coast of Oauh. Haleiwa (Hale'iwa) located on the north coast of Oahu. Mokulela (Mokulēia) located on the north coast of Oahu. Leeward Coast (West Coast) Nanakuli Beach located on the southwest of Oahu. Kahe Point (Electric Beach) located on the southwest of Oahu. Windward Coast (East Coast) Makapu‘u Point (Makapuu) located on the eastern tip of Oahu. Waimanalo located on the east of Oahu. Oahu Airfields Honolulu Airfield (John Rodgers Field) today as Honolulu International Airport (Daniel K. Inouye Airport). Hickam Field (Hickam AFB) located west of Honolulu today part of Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH). Luke Field (Ford Island Airfield) located on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Barber's Point Field (Kalaeloa Airport) located at Barber's Point on the southern coast of Oahu. Ewa Field located at Ewa on the southern coast disused today. Bellows Field (Bellows Station) prewar secondary airfield still in use today as Bellows Air Force Station MCTAB. Wheeler Field prewar secondary airfield near Wahiawa across from Schofield Barracks. Waiele Field (Waiele Gulch Army Airfield) located adjacent to Wheeler Field Kaneohe Field (NAS Kaneohe) borders Kaneohe Bay still in use today as Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH). Kahuku Airfield (Kuilima Air Park) prewar airfield used postwar as Kuilima Air Park. Haleiwa Field located on Oahu disused today.
