Location Pearl Harbor is located on the southern coast of Oahu in Hawaii in the United States. Divided into West Loch, Middle Loch, East Loch and Southeast Loch with Ford Island in the center. To the east is Hospital Point, Pearl Harbor Naval Base and Hickam Field (Hickam AFB), today Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH). Prewar Pearl Harbor was the U.S. Navy (USN) base for the Pacific Fleet. "Battleship Row" a row of moorings alongside Ford Island where the battleships were moored plus submarine pens, fuel farms and other harbor facilities. Wartime History On December 7, 1941 five Japanese Navy Type A midget submarine plus two waves of carrier aircraft from Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku, and Zuikaku launch a surprise attack targeting Pearl Harbor, Ford Island and the U.S. Navy warships moored on Battleship Row plus other targets in the vicinity and elsewhere on Oahu. On March 4, 1942 at 2:10am Kawanishi H8K Emily flying boats from the 24th Air Flotilla, based at Jaluit and Wotje attempted to bomb Pearl Harbor but due to clouds released their bombs one bombs Mount Tantalus without damage and the second bombs the sea harmlessly. Today Pearl Harbor is still used by the U.S. Navy as an anchorage and base area. Several museums and memorials ring the harbor, includes USS Arizona Memorial and Museum, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and USS Missouri Memorial Museum. Ford Island Island at the Center of Pearl Harbor and Luke Field. Battleship Row USS Arizona Memorial and Museum The museum contains detailed history about the attack, and artifacts. Included are parts of Japanese aerial torpedo discovered impacted in the mud after the war and fragments of attacking airplanes. It also allows visitors to cross Pearl Harbor to visit the USS Arizona memorial. The USS Arizona and Arizona Memorial are located directly off her bow. USS Missouri BB-63 Permanently moored at Pearl Harbor as part of the USS Missouri Memorial Museum. USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park This museum is located across from the Arizona Memorial Center. The museum includes the restored USS Bowfin submarine and US Submarine Museum. USS Bowfin SS-287 Permanently moored at Pearl Harbor as a part of USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park.
