Location Waikiki is a beach front neighborhood of Honolulu on the southern coast of Oahu. Also known as Waikiki Beach. Prewar and during World War II part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today part Honolulu County in the State of Hawaii in the United States. Wartime History After the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 Waikiki beach was fortified with barbed wire in case of a Japanese invasion. During the war, the beach front hotels were used by American servicemen for rest and recuperation. Today Waikiki one of the most popular tourist beaches on Oahu.
