Aircraft History
Built Nakajima. True serial number unknown. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber Kanko / B5N2 Kate manufacture number unknown.

Wartime History
Unit history unknown, possibly operated from Kavieng Airfield.

Mission History
Sometime between 1942–1944 ditched near New Hanover and Tsoi Island nearest to Anelaua Island.

Wreckage
In the early 1960s, this Kate was discovered upright on the seafloor but the plane was known to locals prior. The wing Hinomaru is still visible. Since discovery, this Kate has become a popular SCUBA dive site.

Rod Pearce adds:
"I first dived this Kate about 1984. The plane is at Anaula Island in about six meters of water. Someone had tried to salvage the aircraft with the help of 44 gallon fuel drums but had done some damage to the tail section."
