Location Lat 2° 30' 0S Long 150° 15' 0E New Hanover Island is part of the New Hanover Island Group (New Hanover Islands) located off the western tip of New Ireland and Kavieng. The local name is Lavongai. Offshore is Selapiu Island. Wartime History During July 1941, following their landing at Kavieng, Japanese Navy No 2 Maizuru Special Naval Landing Force (2nd Maizuru SNLF) landed on New Hanover without opposition. Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. Allied missions against New Hanover Island August 25, 1943 - February 21, 1944 Chapman's Reef Famous for its barracudas, and a Japanese ship and midget submarine sunk off the northwestern tip of New Hanover off Three Islands Harbor.
