Aircraft History Built by Curtiss-Wright during 1944. Constructors Number 32713. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-46D-5-CU Commando serial number 44-77317. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 2nd Combat Cargo Group (2th CCG), 5th Combat Cargo Squadron (5th CCS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On September 30, 1945 took off from Finschhafen Airfield. Thirty minutes into the flight, suffered an engine failure. When attempting to return to the field, the second engine failed forcing this C-46 to ditch into the sea near shore. Rescue Afterwards, all aboard were rescued by an amphibious DWUK and returned safely to shore.
