Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47B-20-DK Skytrain serial number 43-49762. Ferried overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 374th Troop Carrier Group (374th TCG), 6th Troop Carrier Squadron (6th TCS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines BP-488069 and BP-488169. No weapons were aboard this aircraft. Mission History On June 18, 1945 took off from Tacloban Airfield (APO 72) on Leyte piloted by 1st Lt. Odis B. Torbett on an operational flight bound for Malabang Airfield (APO 159) on Mindanao. The last contact with this C-47 was at 7:51am by radio from the control tower at Malabang Airfield (APO 159). When this aircraft failed to return it was declared Missing In Action (MIA) as a non battle casualty. Search Afterwards, the 13th Air Force searched 100 miles on both sides of this C-47's course from Tacloban to Malabang on Mindanao and east and west from Davao to Zamboanga and the vicinity of Malabang. Wreckage Postwar, the crash site of this C-47 was found on Mount Guimbaludin near Cotabato on Mindanao. The aircraft was identified by the tail serial number 43-49762. Recovery of Remains Postwar, the remains of the crew were recovered by American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) at transported to Manila Cemetery #2. During June 1947 to July 1947 four sets of remains were laid out on examination tables for examination and were designated as unknowns (X-Files) X3816A. X3816B, X3816C and X3816D. The remains recovered were not individually identified and were transported to the United State for permanent burial. Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. On March 22, 1950 the entire crew was interned in a group burial at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NB at plot R graves 55-57.
