Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company during 1945. Constructors Number 10671. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-54D-5-DC Skymaster serial number 42-72566. Assigned to Air Transport Command (ATC) with their insignia on left side of the rear fuselage. On August 30, 1945 a series of photographs documented this C-54 parked at Kadena Airfield on Okinawa loading a disassembled U.S. Army Piper L-4 Club by U.S. Army personnel from the 11th Airborne Division for use in the occupation of Japan. Postwar On September 18, 1947 became part of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). By 1960, converted into a SC-54D Rescuemaster for Air Sea Rescue (ARS) equipped with four MA-1 rescue kits with a 40 person inflatable raft that could be dropped while airborne. The plane had "Military Air Transport Service" on the upper fuselage, a logo and yellow stripe with outline on the rear fuselage and "Rescue" on the tail. Fate On January 23, 1961 ran off the runway at Bilbao Airport in Spain and was damaged beyond repair and written off. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
