Pilot Captain L. Dunn, ANA (survived) Crew/Passengers 16 other (survived) Force Landing March 9, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Douglas as DC-2-243. Constructors Number 2087. On August 18, 1939 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) as C-39 serial number 38-530. On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). During early 1942, ferried overseas to Australia. Wartime History On March 9, 1942 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) with Australian radio call sign VH-CCF. No known nickname or nose art. By late 1943 stripped to a bare aluminum finish and repainted with a U.S. Star and bar insignia. On December 13, 1943 photographed parked at Garbutt Field in Townsville. Mission History On March 9, 1944 took off piloted by Captain L. Dunn on a flight and suffered carburettor icing that resulted in the aircraft force landing at Molesworth in Victoria. All three crew and fourteen passengers survived the landing unhurt.
