IJN ? Kōkūtai
|
Aircraft History Built by Aichi at Watanabe Iron Works during the middle or late November 1942. True serial number 136. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Reconnaissance Seaplane / E13A1 Reisen Shiki Sui Tei (Jake) manufacture number 4136. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group) or warship that operated in the Rabaul area. Mission History This Jake crashed into Simpson Harbor near Dawapia Rocks (The Beehives) south of Rabaul. During the crash, the floats and engine were torn off and the aircraft sank upside down. Wreckage During December 2016 discovered by Rod Pearce aboard MV Barbarian II using side scan sonar at a depth of 43 meters. The bomb bay doors were stamped with manufacture number 4136. Rod Pearce adds: "We found the manufacture number 4136 stamped into the bomb bay doors which are closed. I believe this Jake crashed in a take off accident as the engine is detached and lying some 10 meters from the plane. The floats are missing and the aircraft is upside down in good condition." Justin Taylan adds: "If this aircraft is manufacture number 4136, it was built in the middle or late November 1942 with true serial number 136, the 136th aircraft built by Aichi."
