Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Constructors Number 149-38315. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-82 Twin Mustang Serial Number 46-429. On September 18, 1947 became part of the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and redesignated F-82 Twin Mustang Serial Number 46-429. Assigned to the 325th Fighter Group (All Weather). Mission History On December 8, 1950 took off from McChord AFB piloted by Colonel George W. Prentice and and Captain William Athas on a training flight bound for Victorville, California. Flying in thick fog, the plane developed engine trouble. Prentice ordered Athas to bail out and he landed safely and survived. Prentice was killed when the plane crashed into a hillside near Red Btuff, CA. Recovery of Remains After the crash, his body was recovered 200 yards away from the impact. Memorials Prentice is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at section PF, site 137. References Note, some sources list the serial number as 46-0429 incorrectly.
