Pilot Pilot Officer D. Trim (survived) Crashed July 8, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Vought. Constructors Number 5450. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1A Corsair bureau number 50203. Disassembled and loaded aboard USS Table Rock as cargo. On April 26, 1944 departed the United States as part of defense aid to New Zealand. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as Corsair serial number NZ5308. On May 22, 1944 assembled by Unit 60 at Palikulo Field on Espiritu Santo. On June 28, 1944 assigned to No. 21 Squadron at Fighter 2 (Kukum) on Guadalcanal. No known nickname or nose art. On January 11, 1945 suffered a landing gear collapse while landing and sustained damaged. Afterwards, repaired and returned to duty. During July 1945 assigned to No. 23 Squadron. Mission History On July 8, 1945 took off from Piva South Airfield (Piva Yoke) on Bougainville piloted by Pilot Officer D. Trim on a bombing mission over southern Bougainville. Over the target, damaged by a bomb blast. Trim managed to bail before the Corsair crashed near the Rakikau River. Fate of the Pilot Trim landed unhurt and was rescued and returned to duty.
