Pilot FSgt F. Bennett (WIA) Ditched July 5, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Vought. Constructors Number 5028. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1A Corsair bureau number 49781. Disassembled and loaded aboard USS Steamer Bay (CVE-87) as cargo. On May 14, 1944 shipped across the Pacific as part of defense aid to New Zealand. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as Corsair serial number NZ5327 with fuselage code 27. On June 2, 1944 Reassembled in Espiritu Santo. On June 23, 1944 assigned to No. 21 Squadron. Next, assigned to No. 19 Squadron and flown to Guadalcanal. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On July 5, 1944 took off from Guadalcanal piloted by FSgt F. Bennett on a flight. During the flight, this Corsair suffered engine failure and ditched into sea near Kukum. Pilot Bennett was wounded in the crash. This aircraft was written off the books at Guadalcanal.
