Pilot FSgt N. King (survived) Ditched June 25, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Vought. Constructors Number 5545. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1A Corsair bureau number 50304. Disassembled and loaded aboard USS Glacier Park as cargo. On May 12, 1944 departed the United States as part of defense aid to New Zealand. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as Corsair serial number NZ5370 with fuselage code "394". On June 14, 1944 reassembled and BOC by Unit 60 on Espiritu Santo. Later, coded 70 in white on the engine cowling, last two digits of serial number. In December 1944 assigned to No. 21 Squadron. During June 1945 assigned to No. 22 Squadron on Bougainville. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On June 25, 1945 took off from Bougainville piloted by Flight Sergeant N. King on a mission over Bougainville and was hit by anti-aircraft fire then suffered an engine failure and ditched into Empress Augusta Bay near Torokina. Pilot King was unhurt and returned to duty. Officially, this Corsair was written off on Bougainville.
