Pilot Ensign Merville G. Knackstedt (survived) Conway, KS Crashed September 16, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-3 Hellcat bureau number 40834. Wartime History Assigned to the USS Sangamon (CVE-26) to Fighting Squadron 37 (VF-37). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On September 16, 1944 took off from USS Sangamon CVE-26 piloted by Ensign Merville G. Knackstedt on a strike against airfields on Halamahera and failed to return. Fate of the Pilot Afterwards, Knackstedt was rescued and returned to duty.
