Location Lat 1° 0' 0N Long 128° 0' 0E Halmahera Island is the largest island in the Molucca Island Group (Molucca Islands). In Indonesian known as Pulau Halmahera. To the north is Moratai Island. Offshore islands include Miti Island and Ternate Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in North Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku Utara) in Indonesia. Wartime History During the Pacific War, occupied by the Japanese and heavily fortified with 20,000 Japanese troops stationed on the island. Bypassed by Allied forces, the Japanese were left to starve, cut off from supply and their headquarters until the end of the war. Halmahera Island (Pulau Halmahera) Galela (Galeia) located on the northern end of Halmahera includes Galela Airfield and Galela Lake. Djailolo (Jailolo) located on the central western coast of Halmahera. Dodinga (Kampoeng Dodinga) located on the central western coast of Halmahera. Hatetabako (Tatabako, Hatitabako) located on the eastern arm of Halmahera. Lolobata located on the eastern arm of Halmahera. Kaoe (Kau) located on the northeast coast of Halmahera. Sofifi (Oba) located on the northeast coast of Halmahera. Wasile Bay borders the southern end of Halmahera includes Wasile Airfield.
