Aircraft History
Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-5 Hellcat Bureau Number 58713.

Wartime History
Assigned to USS Emterprise (CV-6) to Fighting Squadron 20 (VF-20). No known nickname or nose art.

Mission History
On September 6, 1944 took off from USS Enterprise (CV-6) piloted by Ensign Howard A. Holding on a mission against Yap. At the start of a strafing run, suffered a mid-air collision with F6F Hellcat 58675 over Yap. Both aircraft crashed and neither pilot was able to bail out. When this plane failed to return listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Also lost was F6F Hellcat 58675 (MIA) and F6F Hellcat 58471 (MIA).

Memorials
Holding was officially declared dead on February 6, 1946. He earned the Air Medal, Purple Heart, posthumously. Holding is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. He also has a memorial marker at Memory Grove Memorial in Salt Lake City, UT. Holding also has another memorial marker at Salt Lake City Cemetery in Salt Lake City, UT at West 4-78-5W.
