IJN Tainan Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi and completed during November 1940, as the 13th G6M1 built. At the factory painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces with black on the inner sides of each engine cowling and top of the nose. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as G6M1-L2 Betty manufacture number 613. This plane was the transport version of the Type 1 / G4M1 Betty bomber. Wartime History Assigned to the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group) as one of two transports, the other was G6M1-L2 209 Tail V-903. Tail number V-902. On August 29, 1942 while parked at Buna Airfield (Old Strip), destroyed during an air raid by B-26 Marauders from 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG) and P-400 Airacobras. The attack burned the aircraft's center section, leaving only the engines and tail section. Wreckage As of 2000, small pieces of this wreck and engines remained near the middle of Buna Airfield (Old Strip).
