Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi Kokuki K. K. at Naruo. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 97 Large Flying Boat / H6K Mavis manufacture number unknown. This flying boat was either model H6K4 or H6K5. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known markings or tail code. During September 1943 moored in Makin Lagoon about 500 yards off Chongs Wharf on Makin Island. Strafed by U.S. Navy (USN) F6F Hellcats and sunk. Also sunk were H8K2 Emily No. 1 and H8K2 Emily No. 2. Wreckage This flying boat was discovered about 500 yards northwest of the end of King's wharf. Known to local fisherman, small parts have been pulled up over the years in fishing nets. During 1992, Stan Gajda dove this wreck and recovered the radio using an air lift pump. He then completed preservation and conservation work on the items. Stan Gajda adds: "I also recovered and restored the 20mm Type 99 cannon from the sunken Mavis at Makin." References Thanks to Stan Gajda for additional information Contribute
