Enlargement of F1M2 Pete Tail 58- fuselage abandoned near Rabaul at the edge of Simpson Harbor
(Lower center) F1M2 Pete fuselage with tail 58- with the rudder missing from 958 Kōkūtai (958 Air Group) below is a stenciled "9". The rear fuselage has a vertical white stripe and the fuselage Hinomaru (Rising Sun) is outlined with a border. Both cockpits have the flight instruments and gauges removed.The upper surfaces dark green paint is worn from sun exposure and is beginning to expose gray exterior primer paint or bare aluminum below.
In the upper portion of the photograph is Japanese aircraft wreckage including the right outer wing, tail turret and cockpit center section of a G4M1 Betty. Also a drop tank and other Betty and Zero wreckage. At the right is the fuselage of a D3A Val dive bomber.
