On February 11, 1942 Thorn was co-pilot and Gibson was pilot aboard Hudson A16-126 on a low level bombing mission against Japanese ships in Gasmata Harbor and was shot down by intercepting A5M4 Claudes and crashed inland from Gasmata. Both Thorn and Gibson remain listed as Missing In Action (MIA).
