Mission History This I-16 force landed wheels down on the steppe. Possibly, landed June 24, 1939 after air combat with Japanese fighters. Wreckage The intact plane was captured by the Japanese in the disputed border area. This I-16 disassembled and shipped by rail across Manchukuo (Manchuria) then by embarked as cargo aboard a ship to Japan for technical evaluation. The plane was repaired to flying status and repainted with a bare aluminum or light gray with a Hinomaru (Rising Sun) insignia applied atop the Soviet star insignia. Possibly parts of other captured I-16s were used to make it airworthy. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References Nomonhan (1990) page 271 Contribute
