Aircraft History Built by Nakajima during June 1942. Uncodedd serial number 393. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 1 Fighter Hayabusa / Ki-43-I Oscar manufacture number 493. Wartime History Assigned to the 11th Hiko Sentai (11th Flying Regiment). No known markings or tail number. During 1943, this Oscar was abandoned at Munda Airfield on New Georgia Island. Likely, this aircraft was damaged on the ground or force landed returning from a mission. Wreckage During early August 1943 after the Battle of Minda, this aircraft was captured by the U.S. Army. Afterwards, examined by U.S. intelligence and reported as "Oscar Mark 1" with serial number [manufacture number] 493. No markings or tail code were recorded. Richard Dunn adds: "The tanks on four Type 1 model 1 fighters (Nos. 493, 685, 695, and 725) inspected at Munda had six layers of rubber. The inner layer was similar to red tube rubber. The other layers were black rubber. Total thickness was 1/8th inch. The padding was 1/4th inch thick and thought to consist of cellulose or cotton fibers. The outer cover was described as aluminum painted fabric."
