"What I think the photo shows is an example of a steel fuel tank which has deteriortaed at a different rate than the aluminim structures. We have both allied crash reports and Japanese documentary evidence that some Type 3 fighters were equipped with steel fuel tanks. Since the tanks were integral that means that the outer surface of the tank was part of the lower wing skin. I think this is what the photo shows."
