Aircraft History Built by Lockheed in Burbank as L18-40-11 Model 18 Lodestar serial number LT921. Constructors Number 18-2125. Purchased by Australian National Airways (ANA) and registered in Australia with call sign VH-CAH. Wartime History During early 1942, requisitioned by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) and designated C-56B-LO Lodestar serial number 41-921. Painted with olive drab upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces with U.S. star insignia on the fuselage and wings with large "U.S. Army" in black on the lower side of the wing but retained the Australian call sign VH-CAH. Later, redesignated as serial number 42-68354. No known nickname or nose art. During March 1942 assigned to the 374th Troop Carrier Group (374th TCG), 21st Troop Carrier Squadron (21st TCS). In May 1942 assigned to 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron (22nd TCS). During November 1942 returned to Australian National Airways (ANA) but continued to be operated by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). Wartime History On November 30, 1942 took off on a flight bound for Dobodura Airfield. While on final approach to land, a Japanese air raid was underway and this plane was hit by gunfire. Damaged, this Lodestar stalled and crashed short of the runway without injury but was written off. Afterwards, camouflaged with vegetation. Ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
