Pilot 2nd Lt. William P. McChristy (KIA, BR) CA Crashed June 22, 1944 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 222-5647. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38F Lightning serial number 41-7520. Wartime History Assigned to 440th Base Unit (44th BU). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On June 22, 1944 took off from Santa Maria Army Air Field piloted by 2nd Lt. William P. McChristy on a training flight. This aircraft crashed roughly one mile southeast of the airfield. McChristy was killed in the crash and his body recovered. Memorials McChristy was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at section OS A, site 103-A.
