Corporal Jim Nichols and Captain Richard I. Bong with P-38J "Marge" 42-103993 at Nadzab Airfield
The P-38 has the nickname "Marge" with a 20" x 24" photograph of Marjorie "Marge" Ann Vattendahl yearbook portrait enlarged and color tinted by Jim Nichols, 5th Fighter Command A-2 (intelligence). The photograph was adhered to the gun cover with glue and varnish. This P-38 had red propeller spinners. On the left side of the nose was stenciled "993" (the last three digits of the serial number) and below Project Number 96597.
