Aircraft History
Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 3177. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J-15-LO Lightning serial number 42-104343. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA).

Wartime History
Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 475th Fighter Group (475th FG) "Satan's Angels", 431st Fighter Squadron (431st FS) "Hades". No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines V-1710-91 serial number A-049209 and V-1710-89 serial number A-037889. Armed with 20mm cannon made by International Harvester serial number 124239 plus .50 caliber machine guns made by Savage serial numbers 1176920 and 1176958, High Standard serial number 1075020 and 612166.

Mission History
On October 13, 1944 took off from Borokoe Airfield on Biak piloted by 2nd Lt. Donald W. Patterson on a training flight. The weather was ceiling and visibility unlimited (CAVU. Last seen one mile north of Noemfoor. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Memorials
Patterson was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. He is also memorialized on the grave of his sister, Betty June Patterson Tuttle in La Rosa Cemetery in Woodsboro, TX.
