Pilot 2nd Robert N. Sylvester, O-732398 (survived) ME Crashed July 3, 1943 MACR 1054 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 222-7815. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38G-10-LO Lightning serial number 42-13415. Disassembled and shipped overseas to China-Burma-India (CBI) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 347th Fighter Group (347th FG), 339th Fighter Squadron (339th FS). No known nose art or nickname. When lost engine V-1710-55 serial numbers 42-93119 and 42-29267. Armed with 20mm cannon maker unknown serial number unknown and four .50 caliber machine guns makers and serial numbers unknown. Mission History On July 3, 1943 at 1:00pm took off from Fighter 2 (Kukum) on Guadalcanal piloted by 2nd Robert N. Sylvester on an escort mission over Rendova Island. Last seen by P-38 pilot 1st Lt. James W. Hoyle. When this plane failed to return it was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Sylvester was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Sylvester is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. He also Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine.
