Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Model 422-85-14. Constructors Number 422-1004. This plane was a prototype with a P-38G-10-LO airframe, the twelfth G model set aside for use as a prototype with P-38J style engine nacelles equipped with 1425 hp V-1710-75/77 (V-1710F-15) engines with paddle blade propellers. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38K-1-LO Lightning serial number 42-13558. Although the plane had better performance, the War Production Board was unwilling to suspend production for the retooling and changes required.
