Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 1046. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38H-1-LO Lightning serial number 42-66535. Disassembled and shipped overseas and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 80th Fighter Squadron (80th FS) "Headhunters". Assigned to pilot Don McGee. Nicknamed "Staten Island or Bust". On April 12, 1943 took off from Port Moresby piloted by McGee on a mission to intercept an incoming Japanese air raid and claimed a G4M1 Betty shot down. On October 12, 1943 damaged in a taxi accident at Kiriwina Airfield and written off. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
