Map of the loss of P-38H Lightning 42-66562 south-southwest of Tsili Tsili
On December 31, 1944 at 1:15pm took off from Nadzab Airfield No. 1 on a cross country flight bound for Port Moresby. Last sighted at 1:45pm roughly 17 miles south-southwest of Tsili Tsili over the Banir River with the intended route to Port Moresby. The typed notation reads:
"Pilot: Capt. William C. Gronemeyer
Type Acft: P-38-1
AC Serial No. 42-66562
Time take off: 1315/I, 31 Dec 44."
