Pilot 2nd Lt. Charles E. Black, O-746028 (MIA / KIA) WA Ditched January 17, 1944 MACR 1775 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 1690. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J-5-LO Lightning serial number 42-67179. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SoPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 347th Fighter Group (347th FG), 339th Fighter Squadron (339th FS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On January 17, 1944 took off from Stirling Airfield piloted by 2nd Lt. Charles E. Black on a bomber escort mission over Rabaul. This aircraft was last seen at 2:00pm over Blanche Bay. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Black was officially declared dead on January 16, 1946. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Black is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
